SUMMARY/SCOPE:

The SimulationLab & Clinical Teaching Assistant at Hardin-Simmons Schoolof Nursing plays a key role in delivering high-quality, experientiallearning opportunities for nursing students. This hybrid position is primarilyresponsible for supporting the simulation lab and its operations while alsoassisting the program faculty with the supervision of students during clinicallearning experiences. The role combines hands-on technical support, studentinstruction, and collaboration with faculty to enhance clinical reasoning andpractical skill development. Working under the supervision of a Master’s ordoctoral-prepared nursing faculty member,this position provides technical operations and support for the Simulation& Skills Lab, including preparing and maintaining equipment, staginglearning environments, assisting faculty during skills and simulation sessions,and ensuring lab safety, inventory, and smooth daily operations. The rolesupports high-quality, experiential learning opportunities for nursing.

This position isapproved by the Texas Board of Nursing under 3.7.5 EDUCATION GUIDELINEUtilizing Clinical Teaching Assistants and Skills Lab Instructors.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Supports faculty across the College of Health Professionalswith initiatives involving clinical simulation and effective teachingstrategies in a simulated patient care environment.

Oversees preparation of all simulated patient careenvironments and components such as equipment, supplies, computers, andmaterials needed to replicate virtual healthcare settings.

Collaborates with faculty to ensure the preparation of labsupplies and equipment based on faculty requests and course schedules.

Oversees operation and maintenance of computerizedsimulation equipment.

Oversees the scheduling of learning experiences in theclinical/simulation lab by ensuring open lab and structured lab utilizationtimes are available, communicated, and appropriately resourced.

Participates, as needed, inproviding solutions for problems in the HSU School of Nursing.

Responds appropriately to anannual evaluation conference with the Assistant Professor of Nursing/Director of Curriculum.

Engages in appropriate and requiredprofessional development activities that foster the achievement of programoutcomes and development of the HSU School of Nursing.

Participates in external andinternal recruitment activities for the HSU School of Nursing.

Follows the organizationalchain of command for reporting problems in the HSU School of Nursing.

Maintains accuraterecords/documents and submit timely reports.

Records/documents simulationactivities/labs including but not limited to syllabi, grades, and office hours.

Maintains familiarity with theaccreditation requirements of the Texas Board of Nursing (TXBON rule 215.7 (c),Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Society for Simulation inHealthcare (SSH), and the Southern Association of Colleges and SchoolsCommission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

Maintains all Society forSimulation in Healthcare (SSH) supportive documentation and participate in thesimulation lab accreditation process.

Participates in preparation forand in meetings of the accreditation agencies and TXBON visits.

Understands and upholds thepolicies in the universities’ Undergraduate/Graduate Catalogs, HSU School ofNursing Student, and Faculty Handbook(s).

Assists with in the budgetplanning process.

Makes recommendations regardingequipment, computer and simulation labs, technology, software, and supplies.

Collaborate withsimulation coordinator, faculty, and IT support to ensure smooth laboperations.

Lab assistants or labcoordinators are not considered nursing faculty and, therefore, they cannotteach students, nor can they evaluate students’ performance in the skills lab.However, the lab assistant or lab coordinator who is a nurse may follow a pre-setlab procedure, coach the students, and check-off students’ practice in the lab.Checking-off practice differs from evaluation, as evaluation is a morecomplicated activity and involves making a decision about a student’sperformance, skills acquisition, and mastery of content.

Serve as a resource tostudents during skills labs, open lab hours, and simulation experiences.

Assist with thecoordination and logistics of clinical placements when needed.

The SimulationLab & Clinical Teaching Assistant is responsible for preparing,staging, and resetting the simulation and skills lab rooms. This includesmanaging manikins, task trainers, supplies, and props to ensure a professionaland functional learning environment.

The position operates and troubleshoots simulation software, audiovisualsystems, and manikin controllers during lab sessions. The Simulation Lab & Clinical Teaching Assistant alsoperforms routine maintenance on equipment, coordinates repairs with vendors,and monitors inventory to maintain stock and reorder supplies as needed.

During simulation and skills sessions, the SimulationLab & Clinical Teaching Assistant supports faculty by managingroom flow, moulage, timing, and scenario cues. The role also assists withdebriefing logistics, such as managing video playback and securing recordingsin accordance with policy.

The Simulation Lab & Clinical Teaching Assistant ensuresthe safety and cleanliness of the lab, enforces equipment handling guidelines,and creates and maintains standard operating procedures, quick-start guides,and checklists for lab use.

This role tracks student attendance, lab usage, and equipment checkouts whilemaintaining accurate records for program needs. Coordination with IT andvendors is also required to ensure proper operation of software, hardware, andaudiovisual systems.

While the Simulation Lab & Clinical TeachingAssistant may coach students during practice sessions under thesupervision of faculty, the role does not independently teach or evaluatestudents.

The Simulation Lab & Clinical Teaching Assistant collaborateswith simulation coordinator, faculty, and IT staff to ensure smooth laboperations and alignment with program objectives.

Performs other duties asassigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree fromfour-year college or university required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal candidatemust meet the minimum requirements for employment in the baccalaureate innursing program as required by the Texas Board of Nursing (TXBON) [rule215.7 (c)]; Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and theSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Hold a current and unencumberedlicense or privilege to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas.

Certified Healthcare SimulationEducator – CHSE certification is strongly preferred at the time of hire.

Must exhibit a high level ofcommitment to the Christian faith consistent with the mission and heritage ofthe university.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current Registered Nurse (RN)license in the state of Texas (required).

Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPRcertification (required).

Manufacturer trainingcertifications for simulation manikins, task trainers, or audiovisual systems(e.g., Laerdal, Gaumard) (preferred).

Information technology orAV-related certifications (preferred).

Lifting and moving equipmentand supplies is a routine part of the job. Manikins and carts may weigh 25–50pounds and require safe lifting techniques or team assistance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is a Non-Exempt/Hourly,Full-Time Staff Position at the Hardin-Simmons University campus in Abilene,Texas.

A regular 40-hour work week isexpected and possibly more during peak periods of the academic year. Infrequentwork on evenings or Saturdays, when needed.

All hours worked beyond 40hours in a single work week will be compensated at time and a half, per FLSAguidelines.

Must have and maintain a validClass C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurableunder the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive tocomplete work assignments on and off campus, as needed at the various clinicalsites.

Additional travel may berequired on occasion for training or professional development.
