BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT DANCE DEPARTMENT Overview Graduate Teaching Assistants in the Dance Department are awarded tuition remission for the Master of Fine Arts in Dance program in exchange for teaching undergraduate dance courses. Successful candidates must apply for and be admitted to the MFA in Dance program in order to qualify for this position. A teaching audition and interview will be required for selected candidates. Responsibilities • Teach a minimum of two undergradua te dance courses per semester (3 -6 total load hours), as assigned by the Chair of Dance. Courses could include Ballet, Modern Dance, Tap, Jazz, Composition, Improvisation, or other courses depending on the candidate’s experience. Graduate Teaching Assistan ts are expected to adhere to University guidelines for teaching faculty, including preparing a syllabus for students, conducting classes and examinations, and meeting with students as necessary. Graduate Teaching Assistants are supervised by graduate facul ty and receive feedback through faculty observation and student course surveys. • Assist with operational responsibilities in the Dance Department including attendance at specified faculty meetings and Dance Department meetings, assistance with recruitment trips, serving as an assistant with one additional course as needed, etc. • Maintain full-time enrollment in the MFA in Dance program • Maintain a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average Qualifications • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in dance or a dance - related area; the Graduate Teaching Assistant will demonstrate the ability to perform graduate level work as exhibited by an undergraduate GPA of 2.8 overall and 3.0 in dance -related studies • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the field of dance as a performer, choreographer, and/or instructor • Record of success as a dance educator • The Graduate Teaching Assistant must articulate a Christian worldview in one’s teaching and academic discipline and fully support the University Vision, Mission, and Statement of Faith .
