Prison Guard Responsibilities & Duties

• Monitor inmate behavior and activity to ensure compliance with facility rules.
• Conduct regular security checks and inspections of cells and common areas.
• Respond promptly to emergencies, altercations, or disturbances within the facility.
• Escort inmates to and from different locations within the facility or for external appointments.
• Enforce rules and regulations to maintain order and discipline.
• Assist in the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates through support programs.
• Prepare reports and maintain records of inmate behavior and incidents.
• Conduct searches for contraband and unauthorized items.
• Coordinate with other correctional staff to ensure effective communication and operations.
• Provide basic first aid or coordinate emergency medical assistance as needed.

Prison Guard Qualifications & Skills

• Previous experience in correctional facilities or law enforcement.
• Certification in correctional officer training programs.
• Strong conflict resolution and crisis management skills.
• Proficiency in self-defense techniques.
• Understanding of legal requirements and prisoner rights.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience in de-escalation techniques.
• Bilingual or multilingual abilities.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum age requirement, typically 18 or 21 years old, depending on the facility.
• Successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
• Physical fitness and ability to pass physical exams.
• Completion of a corrections or guard training program.
• Basic knowledge of security procedures and standards.
• Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
