DEAN, WASHBURN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Washburn University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech). The Dean serves as the academic, fiscal, and managerial leader for a dynamic, community-engaged School. Washburn Tech is recognized for its innovative teaching and course delivery, excellent academic programs, national training centers, pioneering community partnerships, and successful grant activities.
Founded as Northeast Kansas Vocational Technical School in 1964, and in 2008, the management of the school shifted from being managed by a local Board of Education to being operated as an academic unit administered by Washburn University and governed by its Board of Regents.
Today, operating as Washburn Institute of Technology, it is recognized nationally for its excellence and is considered a leader in modeling the future of technical education. Its true partnership with Washburn University enhances opportunities for students and shows the synergies realized when the models for technical education and traditional university education work together. Washburn Tech is the managing partner of a consortium of 17 member school districts and works diligently to serve the technical education needs of high school students. An additional campus location, Washburn Tech East, will open in May of 2019, to better serve the east side of Topeka.

The dean of Washburn Tech has major responsibilities that include maintaining the policies, procedures, and regulations as set forth by Washburn University and for managing the University’s efforts in coordination with the Technical Education Authority of the State of Kansas. The dean reports to the Washburn University Vice President of Academic Affairs and is responsible for the following:
· Ensures student-centered, quality academic programs addressing the diverse needs of students and employers
· Supports innovation and faculty development with a strong commitment to teaching, learning and student success
· Leads strategic planning for Washburn Tech, including planning in coordination with Washburn University for technology, information systems, human resources, budgeting, and facilities planning
· Builds on existing relationships and creates new relationships with school districts, businesses, economic development organizations, grant organizations and others important to the success of Washburn Tech
· Supervises, supports and manages team of faculty and staff to maximize employee performance and facilitate professional growth. Maintains a healthy, fair, and inclusive work environment by promoting diversity, exercising teamwork and collaboration. Actively promotes a professional workplace culture of mutual respect and collegiality for all members of the institution.
· Provides strong financial leadership as we address, and position Washburn Tech as a leader, in the evolving Kansas education environment
· Commits to continuous quality improvement, innovation and data-informed decision making, and integrating Washburn Tech more closely with Washburn University
· Works closely with Washburn University and community partners to meet the educational goals of students and workforce needs of the community
Required qualifications include an earned master’s degree or other equivalent advanced degree from an accredited college or university; a record of progressively responsible leadership experience with at least seven years of full-time experience as a senior executive in education, business, industry, or government; demonstrated knowledge of technical education.
Preferred qualifications include reside or be willing to relocate within six months of hire to Shawnee County, Kansas; an earned doctorate from an accredited college or university; at least seven years of senior level experience in a technical college, community college or four-year university; higher education teaching experience; experience managing fiscal affairs for a comparable educational institution; and cultivation of relationships with community partners to better the educational success of students and serve the community’s educational and workforce needs.
