Associate Dean for Agriculture and Culinary Arts

Columbia Basin College ("CBC" or the "College") seeks an Associate Dean for the Agriculture & Culinary Arts Division who will be responsible for developing, administering and coordinating comprehensive programs of instruction for those disciplines.  This is a new position and the Associate Dean will be responsible for working with the leadership team, as well as faculty and staff in this area to grow the agriculture program and develop a new culinary arts program.  The Associate Dean will plan and develop the instructional objectives for the division and will also serve as the administrative head of the respective area with faculty and staff direct reports.
 

The Associate Dean assists with administrative assignments within the instructional program, and participates as a member of the instructional administrative team in the general operation of the instructional program.  The Associate Dean for Agriculture & Culinary Arts reports to the Associate Vice President for Instruction of Professional Technical Education and Instructional Services (AVPI).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the primary leader for the Agriculture & Culinary Arts Division, which includes supervision of faculty and staff direct reports;

  • Develop and recommend overall divisional objectives, plans and policies for the instructional programs within the division;

  • Work closely with the instructional faculty in the formation, justification, development, evaluation, revision and deletion of courses and programs;

  • Articulate and implement a division vision and strategic plan that supports the campus strategic plan;

  • Cooperate with all deans and directors in establishing, implementing and monitoring offerings to meet College needs (e.g., transfer, vocational, community service, contract training.);

  • Develop quarterly and annual course schedule for the division including instructor assignments within established parameters; recommend schedules to the AVPI;

  • Work in concert with AVPI and other deans to meet state FTE expectations;

  • Assume a major role in the recruitment, selection, direction and evaluation of all full and part-time instructional and non-instructional staff, in accordance with college policies, procedures and applicable collective bargaining agreements; this may include disciplinary matters where appropriate;

  • Develop a preliminary budget for the division and be responsible for regulating expenditures within the approved budget;

  • Provide status reports on activities within the division, as requested, and prepare annual reports  to the AVPI reflecting division accomplishments, objectives for the following year, recommendations and suggestions;

  • Provide status reports to the State Board and other funding agencies as needed;

  • Support campus and divisional Assessment and Accreditation efforts including the development of annual and focused program reviews;

  • Interpret policies and procedures of the College to members of the division;

  • Schedule regular meetings of the division and/or of discipline or area sub-groups, as appropriate;

  • Arrange, when advisable, for substitutes in case of absence by faculty;

  • Maintain a current file of all course syllabi for courses taught by the division;

  • Identify divisional staff to inventory, maintain and safeguard facilities and equipment charged to the division;

  • Supervise the preparation of the division's material in the College catalog and other public relations material related to the division;

  • Establish and maintain contact with counterparts and personnel at other colleges and universities, post-secondary institutions and appropriate individuals at area high schools;

  • Establish and maintain contact with appropriate agencies and organizations related to the division's instructional programs and offices of the President and AVPI;

  • Recommend appointments for each program advisory committee for the division in cooperation with the AVPI and work closely with the committee once they are established;

  • Play a major role in planning new instructional buildings;

  • Coordinate and consolidate the planning and equipping of facilities directly related to the division with the appropriate officers of the College;

  • Cooperate with security and the safety committee to ensure safety in the teaching environment;

  • Assist in the development, updating, and the implementation of an instructional strategic plan;

  • Participate in campus-wide activities and committees, as requested;

  • Develop and implement a personal professional development plan;

  • May teach with the approval of the AVPI;

  • May have unique instructional assignments as appropriate to division assignment and when requested by the AVPI;

  • Support the labs and scientific apparatus and equipment acquisition and on-going maintenance; and

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university; 

  • Proven teaching experience or have the equivalent experience in business, industry or public agencies; and

  • Have a minimum of five (5) years administrative experience supervising others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience or training in one of the subject areas in this division;

  • Experience with Guided Pathways development;

  • Experience in supervising faculty in a higher education setting;

  • Demonstrated substantial working knowledge and achievement in curriculum and program management;

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, conflict resolution, management and organizational skills;

  • Experience in coaching and mentoring staff;

  • Demonstrated sound working knowledge of personal computer hardware/software and the internet;

  • Experience in institutional and program level accreditation;

  • Demonstrated ability in administration and attention to detail.
